Hello, I’m Brice Garrett your Greenville County Clerk of Court. For the last 9 months I have been honored to serve as your Clerk of Court appointed by Governor McMaster and endorsed by Paul Wickensimer who served honorably in the office for 23 years.

I am proud to continue the standard of excellence The Greenville County Clerk of Court Office has set, a standard of excellence that is replicated statewide. Simply put the Greenville County Clerk of Courts office is the best and has been for many, many years.

What is a Clerk of Court?

People often ask me two questions: what is a Clerk of Court and why do you want to be our Clerk of Court?

The role of the Clerk of Court is to safeguard the integrity of all records and make available to the public all case documents viewable by law, such as civil, criminal and some domestic relations cases.

The Clerk of Court position needs someone with management experience since this is basically a management job.

The Clerk of Court demands the temperament and experience to manage an office of 82 employees between Circuit Court and Family Court to keep the system running without any glitches.

Additionally, as your Clerk, I oversee a budget of over 6 million that provides exceptional service to our customers.

The Clerk must deal with daily administrative duties, as they also serve as a member of the Security Committee for Circuit Court and Family Court.

The Clerk’s role is to assist other court officers including attorneys and judges ensuring that all the court processes, along with the business of the courthouse, are executed smoothly.

The Clerk of Court maintains an approved budget by local government, which is critical in providing adequate staff and supplies, assigning courtrooms with adequate space for hearings and trials, assuring community members summoned for jury duty are comfortable.

The Clerk of Court is the connection that brings together various components of court operations to create efficiency needed to enable courts to carry out their duties. This is a serious management position…

The Clerk of Court works with Judges, the public defender, the Solicitor’s office and over 1600 attorneys in Greenville County.

The Clerk of Court also works with the public, Court Administration in Columbia and closely with the Greenville County Bar Association.

Clerk of Courts are mandated by Court Administration in Columbia. We do not make our own rules. Our IT programs belong to the State. We are mandated by law to follow these policies.

And by law – The Clerk of Court must remain neutral and unbiased.

What the Clerk of Court job is Not…

Although we run on a political ticket, The Clerk of Court is not a political job. This is a full time Management Job with a lot of moving parts.
